In addition to household income, child tax credit calculation is based on how many children are in the claimant’s immediate family. Checks are also run to see if any children are registered disabled.
There is a basic family element paid out of up to £545 per year, with extra elements added depending on the claimant’s circumstances. These elements are as follows:
For every child the yearly amount is up to £2,780.
For every disabled child an additional yearly amount of up to £3,140 is paid.
For every severely disabled child an additional yearly amount of up to £1,275 is paid, in addition to both the basic yearly amount and the disabled child yearly amount.

For the purposes of Child Tax Credit, a child is defined as follows:
A young person under the age of 16 (although Child Tax Credit is paid up until 1st September following the child’s 16th birthday).
A young person over 16 but under 20 who is in higher education or unwaged training.
A young person aged 16 or 17 who is not in education, employment of more than 24 hours per week, or training, but has registered with the Careers Service or the Connexions Service.

A new application will be required for each subsequent tax year. You must notify the Tax Credit Office immediately if your circumstances change, so that your Child Tax Credit can be recalculated.
