The HM Passport Office is the sole issuer of passports in the United Kingdom. Naturally, if you’re looking to have a passport issued or renewed, or request a birth or death certificate, you would need to look elsewhere in other countries. In the UK, however, the HM Passport Office is your only “true” option — and it can be contacted directly on our contact number at (0843 455 0162).
As noted by the company itself, the HM Passport Office is responsible for “civil registration services”, as a branch of the Home Office, and acting through the General Register Office. As an official UK government office, its history is not particularly relevant on its own and closely entwined with both UK law and the general history of the UK.
It was joined by the General Register Office in 2008, which changed the distribution of civil identification slightly. It is currently managed by Paul Pugh (Registrar General for England and Wales) and Mark Thomson (Director General, Her Majesty’s Passport Office).

The HM Passport Office is not meant to be a primary resource for all forms of civil identification. For example, birth, marriage and death certificates are ordered through the General Register Office, and although the HM Passport Office may be able to help with civil identification issues beyond passports, it is recommended to contact the appropriate office (or a private company, if available, valid and preferable).
The office has set various priorities related to its purview of passport applications. It attempts to process 90% of straightforward passport applications within 10 days of their being made, reduce costs, and increase instances where passport fraud was caught. The passport office contact number it provides is often used, and one of the avenues by which the HM Passport Office tries to meet its goal of at least 90% customer satisfaction.
Once again, passport enquiries are best directed to the passport office contact number at (0843 455 0162), listed as appropriate for “passport advice”. Related enquiries which are not primarily handled by the passport office can be directed elsewhere; in particular, enquiries about birth, marriage and death certificates should be made at the General Register Office’s contact number at (0843 455 0163).
